Five Steps to Follow When Planning Your Next Home Remodeling Project

January 29, 2020

You’ve decided that you want to remodel your home. This is a great first start, but there’s a little bit more to the planning process to ensure a smooth remodel. Choosing to remodel is the beginning, but don’t worry. We’ve outlined the steps you should take when planning a home remodeling project that will minimize stress.

The 5 Steps to Consider When Planning Your Home Remodeling Project

Let’s break down each step.

1. Determine the Scope of Your Remodeling Project

The decision to move forward on transforming your home opens the discussion of how large you want your remodeling project to be. Are you choosing to only renovate one room in your house? Are you choosing to add-on to your existing home?

In addition to determining the scale of your project, you’ll need to do some research on what your needs will be, what you want the look of the room(s) to be, and most importantly, your budget.

Setting Your Remodeling Budget

Your budget will depend on a lot of different factors that will ultimately shape how your remodel will look like. More rooms in your remodel will mean more money spent. Research the typical costs of renovations, including some of your “must-haves” like quartz countertops, custom cabinetry, or new flooring.

Keep in mind, you should allot 10% of your budget to unforeseen expenses. Our remodeling experts are happy to answer any of your remodeling budget questions.

2. Choose Your Remodeling Contractor

Remodeling takes hard work, expertise, attention to detail, and coordination between different vendors. Having a remodeling contractor take on your project will save you time and stress. When it comes to selecting a remodeling contractor, keep these things in mind!

There is no risk in scheduling an initial consultation to discuss the details of your project. You’ve spent time researching and determining what you want out of your remodeling project. Now you can receive professional advice to move forward with your project.

3. Craft a Project Timeline

Now that you’ve hired a remodeling contractor to tackle your project, you will need to work together to craft a project timeline. Timelines are created on the basis of your remodeling project’s specific needs, upcoming holidays, and seasonal factors. Florida’s weather is unpredictable, so that may affect the length of your project.

4. Prepare Your Home Before Project Begins

Once you have a timeline, you should immediately begin crafting a plan for yourself and others in your home.  You won’t be able to use the room or rooms that are being remodeled, so it’s important to make arrangements.

New Construction Projects

If you are adding a home addition or building a separate building for living or entertaining, there will be very little disturbance to your normal routine. It’s less invasive during the majority of the project, except at the end of the project, like when entrances will need to be added to the main home.

Remodeling Within Your Current Home

You should make preparations depending on which rooms will be renovated. If it’s a hall bathroom, you’ll just need to use another bathroom instead. If you are remodeling the kitchen, you’ll need to create a temporary cooking area due to the fact that the kitchen will be under construction.

If multiple rooms are being worked on, it’s a good idea to consider renting a place to stay while renovations are underway. In any event, remove items from the areas being remodeled 1-2 weeks before construction begins.

5. Start Remodeling

After those four steps, you’re ready to begin your remodeling project! Thoroughly taking the time to plan your remodel and understand the project fully before any renovations begin will give you peace of mind. You’ll be that much closer to transforming your home into one of your dreams.
